Mixed Feelings

Date:February 4, 2011
We bought the switch 3-in-1 for a our baby born in July 2010. We chose it as it felt light to steer and when folded up it fitted in the boot of our small car. We also wanted a travel system with carry cot that could be used as a car seat.
We were very happy with the carry cot, it was nice that the baby could fall asleep in it on the car journey and then be pushed around the shops whilst laying flat. He out grew it width wise at about 3-4 months old.
We then moved onto the pushchair, which I have been happy with, I like that when he falls asleep I can pull the hood down low and that it is front or parent facing. It can be a bit fiddly to attach though, and the chassis is a bit heavy to get in and out of the car. As the baby has got heavier it has become more diffcult to steer as the wheels move a lot. Baby is 6 months old now and we are thinking about getting a lighter weight buggy that is easier to fold open.
The biggest disappointment has been the car seat, for the first couple of months it was ok. But when he reached 4 months old it became too small for him, we had taken the removable seat padding out, and thought the headrest could be removed to create more room but this was not the case. We found we were having to wedge him into the seat so we had to stop using it. We bought a maxi cosi instead, which we cannot fit to the switch chassis. My expectation was that we would be using the primo viaggio car seat (with isofix base) for much longer than this and considering how much we paid for it, it is really not good enough.
In terms of the accessories we use the shopping basket, cup holder, the footmuff which adds an extra lining, and the raincover for the pushchair. Haven't used the umbrella much as the winter crept in. Never used the carrycot as a cot so never used the liner for that and never used the stand.

Too heavy and poor quality wheels

Date:February 2, 2011
This pram might be great to look at, but using it on a day to day basis is a real hassle.
1. The wheels are really poor and constantly want to go in the opposite direction to the way you are pushing
2. The breaks could be better, you really need to stamp on them to make sure the break is in place
3. The whole thing is very heavy and very big and long, so getting it in and out of a smallish car or up and down stairs if you live in a flat, is a nightmare
4. The car seat is much smaller and upright than other brands such as the maxicosi, making is uncomfortable for a small baby as they are sitting too upright and then when the baby gets bigger they are too squashed.
5. The pushchair bit comes with a bumper bar that is useless as it restricts leg movement and is positioned so far forward it has no useful function.
6. The whole combination is advertised for up to a 15kg baby. I can see this being the case for the pushchair, but the car seat and carrycot are already getting too small for my baby at four and half months and she is an average 7kg. Having spent a lot of money buying all the bits for this pram I am now going to have to buy a group 1 car seat very soon.
7. It would seem that Mamas and Papas forgot to make any sheets or removable inserts for the carrycot. This is a problem as the lining fabric is a bit rough and gets quite cold. It gets dirty and smelly quite quickly and all you can do is wipe it with a cloth. I have tried using inserts and sheets from other brands but the holes for harness are in the wrong places.
On the plus side
1. The car travel carrycot is useful as a baby can sleep lying down on long car journeys.
2. The pushcair is quite spacious and cosy
3. The cup holder is useful

Don't

Date:January 8, 2011
I am needing to use this again with my second child as we can't afford another pram- so am reminded everyday of how rubbish it is. We used the pram a lot with my ds, but considering what you spend it should handle it. The wheels are rubbish, they don't go straight and reversing a nightmare. And the click on pram bit for baby awful to get off, not only is the attachment difficult to get off, but whenever I do take it off i can't help but wake my baby. For the amount of money you spend on this there are definitely better prams out there. I wish I'd listened to friends who warned me about m&p prams!
